CAREER DETAILS

  • Graduated with an Honors Degree in organic chemistry from Nanjing Teacher's College, China.
  • M.Sc. from Institute of Organic Synthesis, Huazhong Normal University, Wuhan, China with a study of the synthesis and bioactivity of organophosphorus heterocyclic compounds.
  • M.Sc. from Department of Chemistry, Lakehead University, Canada by studying new routes to mononuclear and binuclear transition metal (Ni, Co, Cu) carbonyl complexes containing bis(diphenylphosphino)methane.
  • PhD Degree from Department of Chemistry, University of Western Ontario, Canada with an investigation of anion and metal cation recognition by transition metal rimmed calixresorcinarene derivatives. Designed and synthesized a series of novel macrocyclic ligands which have the ability to incorporate transition metals and to include anions. Found very unusual anion and metal cation recognition of these calixresorcinarene derivatives; and characterized such products by using NMR (including 2D NMR, Dynamic NMR, VT-NMR), FTIR, FAB-MS, Elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction, UV-VIS, GC, TGA, GPC, DSC, SEM, XPS, etc.
  • NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Chemistry, University of Toronto, Canada. Discovered a new intermolecular M-H...H-N hydrogen bonding which may play an important role in biological systems and in homogeneous catalytic hydrogenation. Synthesized some novel phosphine ligands and studied their reactions. Investigated thiolate dihydrogen metal complexes which could be important in nature's hydrogenase and nitrogenase enzymes and which are crucial to catalytic hydrogenation, catalyst design and H2 storage.
  • NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at Department of Chemistry, University of Ottawa, Canada. Discovered a catalyst for olefin/CO copolymerization, and developed a catalytic procedure to convert a hydrophobic polymer to an water-soluble polymer by catalytic methods; developed a novel method for polymerization of vinylacetylene selectively through the vinyl group; developed a novel approach to a,ß-unsaturated acrylated polymers by homogeneous catalysis.
  • Research scientist at Nova Research & Technology Center, Canada. Discovered a new method to prepare methylaluminoxane and a new very active single site catalyst for olefin polymerization. Several different olefins were polymerized to afford polymers with unique properties.
  • Currently on assignment in the Middle East

Dr Wei Xu has published 6 patents and over 20 scientific papers. A list of these is available on request.
